Besides running a busy practice, Dr. Terry Shupe runs an equally busy Haymarket home.  She is a single mother to two lovely twin daughters, Amber and Sarah, different as could be.  The fourth member in their family is a dog named Cookie, a frequent visitor to the clinic.  Interestingly, Dr. Shupe had been a nurse prior to her medical career.  Thus, it is certainly never too late to follow your dreams!

Dr. Shupe earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1979 and returned there to complete her master’s degree in nursing in 1983. After working with a retired family physician at Boston College, she decided to pursue her medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Washington, D.C., graduating in 1990. While at George Washington, she started a Family Medicine Interest Group, which still thrives today.

Dr. Shupe completed her residency at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla. In 1993, she joined Heritage Family Physicians in Kissimmee, Fla., where she practiced the full scope of family medicine, including obstetrics. While there, Dr. Shupe co-authored the American Family Physician journal column “Diary of a Week in Practice” from 1993 to 1999, before moving to Virginia.
